World Games Qualification for MK's Amy

MK Group Account Executive, Amy Starkings will be representing Great Britain at the 2009 World Games in Taiwan, having recently scooped a European silver medal in her sport.

The budding tchoukball player qualified for the World Games with her 7-a-side women's team after winning second place at the bi-annual European Tchoukball Championships, this year hosted in The Czech Republic from 10th to 13th July.

The Great Britain men's team also scooped silver and the Great Britain under U18s claimed a bronze.

The top three teams who played in the tournament automatically qualified for the 2009 World Games - the first time tchoukball has been part of this high-profile international multi-sport event.

Amy, a member of Broadland Tchoukball Club in Martham, said, "I've been playing tchoukball since I was 14 but this was my first European Championships - due to injury and University commitments in the past. It was a great experience and I can't wait to start training for the World Games now as I think we have a great chance of winning."

Tchoukball may be an unusual and little-known sport in this country, but it is one that Great Britain excels at, winning gold in the men's and U18 European Championships in 2006 and silver in the women's competition.

This year the men's, women's and U18 squads took on opposition from Italy, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany and historic rivals Switzerland. Canada also participated for a place at the World Games although they could not compete for European medals.

Qualifying teams for the World Games for both the men and women were Switzerland, Great Britain and Canada. In the previously fought Asian League Taiwanese team 'Chinese Taipei' and Singapore were qualifiers for both the men and women. In the South American qualifiers Brazil men were triumphant.

Tchoukball, a cross between handball and volleyball, is a fast-paced team sport that can be played all year round - indoors, on grass or on the beach. Teams compete against each other by rebounding the ball off a tightly-sprung trampette at either end of the court. Defenders try to catch the ball before it hits the floor and if they don't, a point is scored. Tchoukball is unique because both sides can score at either end of the court. Tchoukball is a non-contact sport.
